Inspirational Quotes and Poems Thursday

Hi all,

While I was an undergraduate student majoring in International Relations, the name 'Nelson Mandela' often appears in texts and discussions. From his years of imprisonment to becoming the first African President in South Africa, Nelson Mandela is one of the crucial figure in Diplomacy and Peace. He used both his words and actions as a political figure to create a better South Africa and in turn inspired the world.

While he was in Robben Island Prison, Mandela was known to recite this poem (Invictus) to other inmates. This poem by William Ernest Henley is one of my favorite quotes of all time. As a child one of Henley's leg was amputated due of tubercular arthritis. His writing in Invictus and other works reflects his personal journey overcoming challenges and perseverance.

I chose this poem today not only an an homage to Mr. Mandela but also because this poem has helped me overcame a personal challenge in the past. It's a poem that I like to use when I need to quiet my mind and have some mental peace because it is that powerful (to me).

Here's the full poem that can be found at poetryfoundation:

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Although Mandela was known to use Henley's work to inspire his fellow inmates now Mr. Mandela's words of wisdom, of peace and freedom will be recited to inspire generations to come. Rest in Peace President Mandela.

"Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do" Nelson Mandela

    Untill next time,
