Michelle Phan Book Review, My Beauty Books Recommendation & Favorite Beauty Channels
I would like to start by saying that I am not a subscriber of Michelle Phan's channel on YouTube. I am neither a fan or a 'hater' of Phan's work. By the time I get around to watching beauty videos and tutorials online I was already in my early twenties and I felt whenever I watch one of Phan's videos it is geared towards a younger audience (even though Phan is a year older in real life). Nonetheless, I love books and makeup and when I saw her book on display at my local library, I just had to give it a chance.
The book is surprisingly more business related than an autobiography. Yes there's a couple of chapters in the beginning of the book that talks about her family history and background before becoming an internet sensation. The majority of the book however, is just her talking about what she knows best which is makeup, using technology to achieve your dreams and branding yourself.
This book is definitely meant to be an inspirational book. It's meant for the hundreds and thousands of her fans and girls/young women who aspire to become the next Michelle Phan. But that shouldn't take away from her as a person and the work that she puts towards her business and brand.
Reading this book, I wouldn't say I learned a lot of "new" things. Mainly (again) because the target audience is not my age range, but there were a few interesting tidbits that I found really interesting. She had a section on getting a smoky eye all five fingers instead of makeup brushes which I thought was quiet clever. There's also a chapter on foundation: different types of foundations, how to select the perfect foundation, skin tone vs undertone all of which are useful things to know if you are interested in makeup. The beauty related chapters were surprisingly smaller than I had envisioned, she then went on to talk about fashion, digital do's and dont's, turning passion into profession and a few other chapters that you can find for yourself if you are interested in reading this book.
This book covers a lot of different topics but if you are interested in more of a beauty and makeup application book I highly recommend Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual and for a book that talks about skin type and skin care, check out The Skin Type Solution by Leslie Baumann. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a subscriber of Michelle Phan's channel (although I do watch some of her older makeup tutorials). Here are a few of my personal beauty channels on YouTube in no particular order.
Fleur De Force
Essie Button
Lily Pebbles
Vivianna Does Makeup
Talk Becky Talk
Tati- Glamlifeguru
Emily Noel
I subscribed to a few more beauty channels but I think those 7 are the ones I watch regularly and whose recommendations and tutorials I like the most. Now if you look those folks up you'll see that 5/7 are British based YouTubers ( I can't believe that's a word). The main reason I watch them is because they do excellent tutorials and an equally important reason is because I can't buy half the things they talk about which is great cause I already have way too much makeup. As always, thanks for reading!
Until next time,
