Rediscovering Philadelphia
Having spent the last four years of my life away in college, moving back to Philadelphia was going to be interesting. Deciding to stay in Philadelphia for graduate school was not an easy decision; after all I did choose an undergraduate college two hours away for a reason. Growing up in Philadelphia was an interesting experiment. My brother and I went through a very different educational experience. I went to a Catholic High School closer to the suburbs and he went to a charter school in the middle of center city. I spent my after school hours doing extracurricular activities such as choir, theater, orchestra and shopping at Franklin Mills or Neshaminy Mall and my brother got to play chess in the Center City Library or hang out at Market Street. And now he wants to stay in Philadelphia for the rest of his life, and I want to go elsewhere.
The turning point for me was when I was in college and my roommate (who spent a weekend in Philadelphia) told me about this amazing yogurt place she found in South Street called Philleo. Since I have a slight obsession with PinkBerry in New York City (a frozen yogurt chain), I was pretty intrigued by the fact that there are these hidden gems hiding in my own backyard. And sure enough, Phileo was really, really good.
Experiencing Philadelphia as a young woman in my early 20's is rather different than when I was in high school. Yes- the Philly cheese steaks & Italian ice are great; the Liberty Bell is still at the same location (the last time I check they have not moved it, again), and it's true that Philadelphia sports fan... well let's just say a bit more enthusiastic than most. But there are places that I don't think I would've appreciated five years ago. I could have easily searched Google, and get a picture of Philadelphia and post it here on my blog. But I want to share the Philadelphia that over the past several month I have been home, really grew to appreciate and love
The bottom line is: I am not about to let anyone else tell me where I'm supposed to go to in my own city. So here's to the beginning of a great adventure. It's time for me to rediscover Philadelphia in my own term and on a post- college graduate budget.
Wish me luck!
