Fables, Vol 1: Legends in Exiles
This series was recommended by my best friend over at The Drowsy Reader when I was looking for a graphic novel to read for the Reading Challenge I am attempting to fulfill this year. If you haven't heard of Fables, it is a weekly comic book series published by DC Comic's Vertigo that's been around since 2002. The characters in the series are made up of fairy tales and folklore characters. The characters or "Fables" were forced out of their homeland by an enemy referred to as "the Adversary". They came to New York City and build a secret community called Fabletown where Fables who are able to blend in with the humans were allowed to stay and those who cannot were sent to the "farm".
Who Killed Rose Red?
The book began with Jack (Jack and the Beanstalk) getting out of a quintessential NYC yellow cab and entering The Woodland Luxury Apartments. As he enter through the building, a clearly distraught Jack rushes to the security office of B. Wolf claiming that there's been a terrible crime. This terrible incident turns out to be the disappearance and possible death of Snow White's sister Rose Red. Can the Big Bad Wolf and Fabletown's Director of Operations Snow White solve the case?
This book contains so much themes, characters (and colors) that as a non comic book reader, I find it a bit overwhelming trying to keep up with all the characters and their story lines. Unlike the Disney fairy tales there are no clear lines between those who are "good" and "bad" because they all have problems. This is not a children comic book series. It has quiet a heavy set of "adult" problems- marital issues, infidelities, dysfunctional family dynamics and financial issues just to name a few (and it's only the first five issues!).
I am still unsure of how I feel about this book. I think I am going to see if I can get my hand on book 2 & 3 because there were a couple of story lines that I find intriguing. Even though I only had to read one graphic novel if I get my hands on book 2 & 3, I will certainly publish and update if my feelings change regarding this series.
