The Day I Decided To Cut My Hair Short & My 5 Tips for Going Shorter
I've had long hair for at least the past decade. Whenever I decided to cut my hair "short" for the past few years I ended up asking for a trim. For the past 6 months, I've been really struggling with my long hair. It's been really difficult to work with it, I've had a lot of hair fall out, the back of my hair constantly gets knotted (which never happened before) and I just grew really sick of washing it. The thing is I love my hair. It's always been a big pride and joy for me to style and care for my hair but clearly we were having relationship issues. My hair for the past 6 months has always been in a bun or a pony.
Cutting my hair short is a HUGE deal for me. I have really round face and all my life people constantly told me I should not have my hair short because it wouldn't flatter my face. I think the last time I had my hair short (circa 2006) the lady cut it way too much and I ended up with a weird bob. I hated it and I was so traumatized which is probably why I've avoided cutting my hair this short. When I decided I wanted to do it, I started collecting ideas and pictures on Pinterest.
The night before my appointment, I wasn't nervous. I sent all of my inspirations to my hairdresser via Facebook in advanced so she knows what to expect. I've been with this hair dresser for many years so I know I'm in good hands and she won't let me walk out of her salon looking ridiculous. When I got to her place, I was genuinely excited. She washed my hair and sat me down on the chair and told me she's going to make the first cut. After the cut, my hair fell above my bra strap and she said she thinks that's a good length and she didn't want to go any shorter if I wasn't sure. I told her that moment passed, full steam ahead, let's cut this hair. I didn't look at my hair until she started finish cutting it mostly because my eyes are really bad without my glasses. When it was all over 20 mins later, my hair falls above my collarbone which was shorter than what I originally intended based on the pictures but I love it.
I know it doesn't look like much. I had trimmed off 4 inches in January so for me it's a lot in just a few months (and how long my hair was!)
1. Find Inspiration! Thank goodness for Pinterest. I was able to find a lot of inspiration. Make sure you find a face (front) and profile (side) pictures to help your hairdresser understand what you really want.
2. Try it out. By that I mean if your hair is long try doing the faux short hair style for a couple of days and see if you like it. Going short can be a shock to the system.
3. Find and talk to your hairdresser. If this is the first time you are getting your hair cut short like me OR have been traumatized before, it's good to find someone who has the patience and is willing to guide you through the process. I like that my hairdresser stopped after the first cut to make sure I was okay.
4. Go with your gut. I didn't tell a lot of people about my decision to go short. I told two of my closest friends and my mom. In the end it's my hair and I get to decide what to do with it.
5. Go slow. If you aren't sure, go with the longer length. If you decide you still want it shorter, you can always go back and get it cut.
It's been exactly one week since I got it cut and I've no regrets. As always, thanks for reading my blog!
Until next time,
