Chomps Snack Sticks- Last Minute Foodie Gifts

During the holiday season there's usually always a lot of food at my parent's house. I consider my dad to be our family's meat connoisseur. He does all the roasts and barbecues and we almost always have some type of fancy and imported meat and cheese for guests so when Chomps Snack Sticks sent me a pack of their samplers I knew just the right person to share it with.

Chomps snack sticks is a very simple company in that they only sell 100% grass-fed, non-GMO beef sticks in three different flavors- Original, Hoppin' Jalapeno and Crackin' Cran.  There's no artificial ingredients, no MSG, nitrates or coloring. Chomps use celery juice as preservatives, the beef sticks are gluten-free and the beef sticks are shelf stable for a whole year.

Here's the ingredient list from the original version of the beef stick, you can find more nutritional information on their website100%Grass-Fed Beef, Water, Sea Salt, Citric Acid,Celery Juice,Black Pepper, Red Pepper, Garlic Powder, Coriander, Stuffed in a Collagen Casing.

When my dad and I tried the samples, it's hard not to compare it with the leading beef sticks brand which is Slim Jim. I actually used to really like Slim Jim when I was in High School. The vending machine used to carry the Slim Jim that also has the cheese next to it (bad flashbacks you guys). When we tried this out we also had  a packet of regular jerky from a popular brand which shall remain nameless and the jerky 2nd ingredient is sugar... Why is there sugar???

So how does Chomps beef stick compares to Slim Jim?

We took some notes and here are the results:

  • The casing of Chomps sticks have less of a "snap" than Slim Jim. which isn't a problem for us.
  • The colors are noticeably less bright than Slim Jim since they don't add any coloring.
  • The beef sticks are very flavorful. They are not as fatty as slim jim and has got a pepper kick at the end.
  • It is on the spicier end for beef sticks that we've tried before (including the original)
  • The Hoppin' Jalapeno actually has real jalapenos peppers in them and it was by far my favorite.
Overall impression: probably the best beef sticks we've ever tried.

When I travel or exercise, I'm actually not a big fan of granola or power bars because a lot of them contain so much sugar. When you are trying to avoid sugar it's hard to find snacks that fit that bill (including jerky apparently).  I think Chomps is a great alternative as well for people who are on gluten-free diets or paleo diets. It is quite pepper-y so if you don't like black pepper or don't like things that are spicy you might want to stay away. But other than that, it's really great. My dad really enjoyed them and I actually asked him how much he would pay for it and he said that he would pay $3 for a stick and I went online and looked up the prices and for a 5ct box of the original it is $11.25 so well within the range of a good, well made and healthy snacks alternative.

As always, thanks for reading!
