Play! by Sephora - My First Foray into Subscription Box Services

Beauty Subscription Boxes made a huge splash in 2010 with BirchBox and we've never looked back.  Over the past 8 years there's been moments of weakness especially when I browse through Instagram but for the most part nothing ever made hit that button until recently.

I don't like the unknowns and surprises which are the two highlights of receiving subscription box service. On a warm spring night while binge watching Korean drama I caved and purchased a box from Sephora.

Why not Ipsy or Birchbox?
So while I was browsing through the May boxes I decided that I would either go for the Play! by Sephora or a Target Beauty box because I know that you get 50 Beauty Insider points (with a purchase of $20) for Sephora and coupon off a certain amount of beauty purchase from Target. I figured if the box was a total fail I would still get something useful. I know that Birchbox has a reward as well but I don't tend to buy makeup online with the exception of Korean or Japanese brands I can't get in store and in those circumstances I would use something like SokoGlam or Yesstyle/Jolse/Wishtrend, etc.

The May Box
If you are like me and can't wait and need spoilers I would recommend MySubscriptionAddiction because she does update. She has list of all of the possible Sephora boxes for May and I think you can call Sephora Customer Service and figure out what you are getting in advanced but I decided not to for this post.

This months' theme is Beauty Goals- celebrating 2 years of Play! by Sephora and there's  5 Deluxe samples with a bonus.

There's Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo which I prefer significantly more than the Drybar Triple Sec dry shampoo I got from the Festival Hair kit from my spring haul. Sephora Collection Mud Mask which I'm going to give to someone who will use it because I don't use a leave-on mask often and if I do I have ones I much prefer that this one. There's also a tiny sample of POREfessional primer by Benefit which I like and I have a lot of these minis that I use while I'm travelling. The last two deluxe samples are the Kat Von Tattoo Liner and Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir mascara. The bonus is Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium which I like but I'm kind of confuse since it's the May box and it's spring I would except a more appropriate scent. For me personally this is a Fall/Winter scent.

Is it worth it?

To be honest this is a little hard because there were some hits and a huge miss. But also because there's so many different box combinations which contains significantly different items like a Becca highlighter and Laura Mercier powder which to me makes each box's value different. I like that there's a couple of products I do use and like (the Drybar Detox & Benefit POREfessional). A couple of new interesting products that I'm excited to try being the Tattoo Liner & Velvet Noir Mascara and a complete miss in the Sephora's own mud mask which by the way the only think I like from the Sephora Collection is the brushes so I think it's kinda unfair putting your own store brand among the prestige brand samples.

I am excited to use my 50 bonus points but at this point I've unsubscribed. If you like trying new makeup and shop at Sephora often then I do think with the 50 bonus point you are getting a great deal because then it's technically $5 for the box. For me since I'm really trying to curate my makeup & skincare collection I don't know if this makes sense. With that said, I'm also waiting patiently for the FabFitFun Summer Box which I much prefer because you know outright the big item you get which in this box is the new Foreo Fofo. valued at $89 that makes the box price tag of $49.99 worth it. The Foreo Fofo uses a replaceable AAA battery which is much better than the $39 Foreo Play that you have to toss when it dies.

I will be back with Sample Sunday starting next week. Let me know what you think about subscription boxes. If you subscribe to any or have unsubscribed and why? As always thanks for reading!

Until next time,
Jessica
