My Imperfect Life after Tidying Up - a New Series

Hello,

I hope as you are reading this, you are safe and well. It's been a crazy few weeks and as I am also adjusting to a new world of living and working, I wanted to share some posts I had written over the past year that I never posted.

In my previous posts I've talked about how KonMari has changed my life. Now that the dust has settled from her Netflix show I want to share what life is like post tidying and let me tell you it's not perfect.

Readers and viewers often get the wrong idea that if you buy into this process that life will be neatly sorted and that's not true at all. In the book, Kondo states that if you committed 100% that a relapsed is not likely to happen, but, there's a couple of things we ought to remember:

1. At the time she wrote her book, Kondo's experiences were limited to the client interactions she had. Meaning that her clients had her direct help (just like the clients in the Netflix series) where she sat down and go through the process with them and created a working plan and a timeline. Most of us who do not have a Marie Kondo (or one of her tidying consultants) are using the books or shows and are crafting our own timeline and priorities which are often not the best.

2. Since I did not have a Marie Kondo to answer to, I often took liberties in the process especially in some categories that overwhelmed me. I can say that on the categories that I actually completed properly (such as clothes, books and let's throw in makeup & skincare), I have actually been pretty clutter resistant. These are categories that have a home and I have been good in making sure that they are used, cared for and loved. These are also the same categories I've found myself buying less of the past few years because I am more conscious of what I am putting into my home.

I can positively say that since I started this process I have not regretted a single thing I've donated, passed on or thrown out (if expired) and more importantly I have not regretted a purchase.

My goal at the end of the series is hopefully to share my personal experience and struggles with clutter and a messy home. It hasn't been a perfect life and the KonMari method in itself isn't perfect. With that said, I think I'll always love for her books and it has helped me improved my life in ways I never thought possible.

Until next time,

Jessica
