Hungry Girl's Guide to Philly Restaurant Week - SUGA by Susanna Foo
Philly Restaurant Week 2018 started last week and will run until January 24, 2018. I recently went to SUGA by Susanna Foo and it's listed as a participating restaurant so I thought I'd do a review in case anyone is interested in dining at SUGA.
Susanna Foo is a pioneer in Chinese/French fusion cuisine and has been a staple in the Philadelphia area since 1979. I remember my dad being heartbroken when she decided to close down her former center city restaurant and how excited we were to hear that she would open SUGA with her son. Her cookbook is amazing for any at home chef whose interested in modern Chinese cuisine.
SUGA is located on Sansom between 17th & 18th street and I highly recommend if you plan on dining at SUGA especially during restaurant week to just park at a parking garage nearby.
Susanna is known for her duck but I decided to try something different. We got the wild mushroom dumpling as an appetizer and it is probably the best dumpling I've ever had. The dumpling skin alone was just so incredible.
Now onto the entrees, the shrimp was great. The special they had which was the duck breast was tasty. Unfortunately my highly anticipated Zhajiang Noodle was not so great and it was disappointing because I've tried their Dan Dan noodles and loved it. The flavors and broth were on point my problem lies with the noodles. I like to be able to chew my noodles but I had to eat the noodles with my spoon because they were just too soft to pick up with chopsticks. I do think they either overcooked it or just let it rest too long while the rest of the entrees were being made.
With that said I still think SUGA is worth a visit. You can find the full Lunch & Dinner Menu for restaurant week on the Philly Restaurant Week page. My recommendation for dinner is the Wild Mushroom Dumplings, Sichuan Chili Monk Fish and the shaking beef bento box for lunch.
